Growing Interest in Rock Island Rails-to-Trails

Our cases relating to the Rock Island Railroad corridor are getting a lot of attention. The Kansas City Star recently wrote an editorial, “Pick Up the Pace on Building Rock Island Trail across Missouri,” stating that “when done, [the Rock Island Trail] could stretch a couple hundred scenic miles across the state and finally help link the Kansas City area to the highly popular Katy Trail.”

The Gasconade County Republican also reported on the state’s plan to convert the Rock Island corridor into a public trail at a meeting sponsored by the Missouri Farm Bureau in Stover. The meeting highlighted the seldom-publicized challenges imposed on landowners by the creation of the trail, such as crime, trespassing, fencing, and landowner liability.

While rails-to-trails may be beautiful public amenities, little attention is given to landowners whose property rights are taken from them to provide these public amenities. We will be holding additional landowner informational meetings this week to answer questions about rails-to-trails and filing a claim for compensation against the federal government.
